Identify and resolve common issues that affect scrap car prices.
The DVLA requires precise paperwork when a vehicle is permanently taken off the road. Understanding what you need to do is crucial to avoid ongoing tax liabilities or fines. The process might seem daunting, but it is actually straightforward once you know the steps.
The most important document when scrapping your car is the V5C logbook. You will need to fill out section 9 (or section 4 on newer logbooks) which refers to 'Selling, transferring or part exchanging this vehicle to a motor trader'.
If you are scrapping your vehicle entirely (not just selling it for parts), the ATF will issue a Certificate of Destruction within seven days. This document legally proves you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
"Failing to notify the DVLA that you've transferred or scrapped your vehicle can result in an automatic £80 fine."
Don't panic! You can still scrap your car without a V5C. However, you must inform the DVLA in writing that you have sold the car to a scrap yard, including the date of sale, vehicle details, and the name and address of the scrapyard.
Once the DVLA is notified, any full months of remaining road tax will be automatically refunded by cheque. You should also contact your insurance provider immediately to cancel your policy or transfer it to a new vehicle.
